IN THIS LESSON

What is the difference between an emotion, feeling, and mood?

Together, we’ll look at the difference between these experiences and how to identify them when you’re in the middle of them.

What are emotions, feelings, and moods?

Emotions:

Emotions are products of a trigger, and are experienced throughout the body. The experience of an emotion is from hormones released to more than just our brains - and last only 6 seconds before either dissipating or transitioning to a feeling or mood

Feelings:

Feelings are the most intense of the three here. Feelings last the longest and often happen when emotions have settled in. These are personal interpretations of emotions shaped by experiences and beliefs.

Feelings can be physical and emotional - we can feel cold physically and cold emotionally.

Moods:

Longer-lasting states that influence behavior without a specific trigger. Moods don't have time frames, they can last for minutes, hours, or days. Where emotions and feelings are triggered by 1 circumstance, moods can be impacted by the weather, if you're tired or hungry, and stress.

Timing is an important difference

Emotions happen first as hormones are released after a specific trigger;

Feelings settle in as the emotional hormones make their way throughout the body

Moods happen last, as the feelings mix with our current state of mind, environment, and needs.
